The Inaugural Jason Roberts Open 2007

Friday February 10th 2006 saw the sad passing of one of the Trinity College Class of 1991’s most loved and respected members - Jason Roberts. Jason fought a heroic battle with cancer for eight years. The anniversary of his passing was commemorated with a golf event held at the Burswood Golf Course. The day was an opportunity for those close to JR to remember a family member and good friend to many. Jason was a talented sportsman who represented the College at the highest level in athletics and football, but golf was his first sporting love. Given JR’s natural talent as a golfer, his brother Dean organised this event so that both friends and family had the opportunity to remember the great times we all had with Jason.

The event saw 34 of Jason’s family and friends teeing off, playing in a Four Ball Better Ball Stableford competition. As a sign of the esteem in which Jason is held, not only did numerous members of the class of ’91 play, but so to, members of year groups both before and after Jason’s time at Trinity College (1987-1991). The golf was all things good, bad and ugly, but that was not the focus of the day. All handicaps from 3 to 36 were represented with all golfers playing the day in the spirit that Jason would have wanted – a competitive event but with all competitors demonstrating a keen sense of humour.

The day finished with presentations for the winners and runners up, nearest the pins and longest drives but the highlight was the presentation made by Joe Rapanaro, Joe Carlino , Frank Trimboli, David Silvestro, Anthony Dibiasi, Gianni Redolatti and Rick Olivieri of an Arsenal football guernsey signed by the 2006 playing squad to the Roberts family. It was a moment treasured by all four generations of the Roberts family present on the day. It was a touching gift given his affinity with the club after a visit to Highbury that Jason made with his brother and Tony Carlino where they held aloft the F.A. Cup.

A very big thankyou to Dean Roberts for his organisation of the event, and to those who donated prizes including L.J. Hooker Thornlie, Richgro Nurseries and Marble Trend - Luke Cruskall (class of 95).

The Roberts Family and all of JR’s friends are looking very much forward to making this an annual event. For all those who knew JR, you are invited to become involved with this event in 2008. If you have not been contacted recently by a member if the class of ’91 to update your details or if you would like more information about this event for 2008 please contact Chris Allanson at Trinity College on 9223 8153 or by e-mail at allanson.chris@trinity.wa.edu.au .
