WATERFORD RUGBY CHANGING ROOMS
Thanks to all the dads who helped last Saturday in
the brightening up of the rugby changing rooms at
Waterford. There were about ten dads in all who came paint-brushes
in hand, and transformed the dark drab walls to shades of
Trinity blue and green. I am sure the boys will be pleased with the
makeover.
PHOTOGRAPHERS
REQUIRED
The Rugby Club is looking for a parent to volunteer to take
photos at each of the 1st and 2nd XV's games and the year 8's, 9's and
10's this year. This is primarily to record the season for the boys
and hopefully help to retain some great memories of their rugby at
Trinity. A digital camera will be provided for this purpose.
Mr. Lewis would also like a parent to video each of the 1st
XV's game to have as coaching tool for the boys. A video camera will be
provided.
Could any willing parents please contact either Mr. Lewis or
Darren Taggart at darren.taggart@taggart.net.au or 0438 790 590.
APPAREL
ORDER AND CONTACT DETAILS FORMS:
As in the last newsletter there are two forms attached
to this newsletter which need to be filled out and returned to Mr. Lewis;
a Contact Details Form and
an Apparel Order Form.
The Contact Details Form enables the Rugby Club to keep in
touch with all its members and through our newsletter provide parents
with the latest information concerning Trinity College Rugby. For those
families who do not return the Contact Details Form the Rugby Club may
need to extract contact details from the Trinity College database.
Any parents who do
not want contact details released to the Rugby Club need
to contact Mr. Lewis directly and the Rugby Club will respect their
wishes.
Please note that this will be the LAST opportunity to
purchase apparel.
TRIATHLON FUND-RAISING
A very big thank you to Colin Mackintosh and all his
volunteers for raising a total of $2750 by marshalling at triathlons. It
is fabulous to see so many parents getting up early to help the
Rugby Club. We may be called on to marshall at another triathlon
mid-season; for those who haven't already volunteered this year this is
an opportunity to do something for your son's Rugby Club.
SYDNEY RUGBY TOUR
FROM THE BOYS' PERSPECTIVE
The 2009 Trinity Rugby Club Tour to Sydney was one which I,
as a senior member of the rugby community enjoyed thoroughly. It was not only
a chance for the 2009 squad to gel and get to know each other but also a
chance to prepare for what hopes to be a successful PSA season. As a
squad we took part in activities outside of what we would experience in
Perth such as a visit to Taronga Zoo, the chance to watch an NRL game, a
visit to ANZ stadium and beautiful Bondi and watching the Force in
Waratah territory to name a few.
As far as the games were concerned, I believe that we
performed to a level which we could be proud of, taking it to both
Redfield College and St Pat’s Strathfield. Both games saw us competitive
throughout and this was an encouraging sign as rugby is the main sport
over in NSW, (if only it were so in Perth).
The tour was a huge success as it ran smoothly and I think
every boy involved in the experience can take a lot from it. The tour
would not have been the success it was without the hard work and
organization of some individuals. I’d like to take this chance to thank
Mr Lewis and Mr Darren Taggart in particular, as well as the likes of Mr
Webb, Mr Leahy, Mr Hailes and all the parents who came along for the
ride. I hope what the boys learnt from tour can be applied in this coming
PSA season and that we can enjoy success throughout the year.

Touring party at Bondi Beach

The boys with Western Force superstar Matt Giteau

On the attack against Redfield College Dural
The Trinity Rugby Club’s tour to Sydney proved a great
success and has left us in great stead for the oncoming season. Our tour
began at four in the morning, and proved quite a laugh mainly due to the
fact that Mr. Hailes looked as though he had nowhere near enough beauty
sleep. Our first training session was apparently designed to be a light
run around, to get the flight out of our legs, yet soon turned to one of
the many infamous punishment session led by no other than Mr. Leahy. This
particular session proved rather humorous with Mr. Lewis being told off
by the local ranger for allowing us to train in the botanical gardens,
this was one of my personal highlights of the tour.
Our first game was out at St Patrick’s Strathfield, who were
generous enough to allow us to train there the day earlier. All the boys
were fired up as this was another opportunity to prove to the selectors
that you were good enough to play First XV rugby. We competed well and
gave them a run for their money, considering many of their players were
either 18 or turning 18 later this year and twice our size (especially in
the front row). Another punishment session followed the next morning at
Sydney’s iconic Bondi beach, this time it was for certain players making
some of the most elementary errors, by forgetting some of the most
important items, such as their boots for the game.
Our second and final game of the tour was against Redfield
College and this proved to be once again a difficult game, but we showed
them that we can play structured rugby and match it with the more
experienced Sydney boys, but unfortunately due to some poor basic errors
and a few refereeing decisions that could have gone either way we went
down by a try. All in all the tour was a great success and proved to be
hard work for all the boys, but I hope it has put us in good stead to
return Trinity Rugby to a powerhouse of the PSA. I would like to thank
Mr. Lewis for the countless hours he put into organising the tour, I hope
this is just the start of great things to come for TC Rugby.
JACK MCIVER - YEAR 12 and 1st XV PLAYER
The Sydney tour was an opportunity for the boys to get
together and bond in preparation for the forthcoming PSA season. As we
all know Trinity Rugby used to be the powerhouse of the PSA and this tour
was a great opportunity to start bringing back the glory days to TC.
The tour began with the right intent but was lacking in
actual results. However, the potential was seen and spirits were raised
and from the onset every training session in Sydney saw each individual
step up and the team as a whole strengthened dramatically. All this new
found potential and skill came to a climax when Trinity old boy and
international rugby sevens player, Will Brock, came down to train the
squad on our final day. Will started the session by giving us a brief
history of his career and achievements, but when asked about the last
Redmond Cup victory, back in 2002, which he was a part of, he simply said
that nothing so far in his rugby career has compared to that win. When
training commenced the entire team raised expectations and trained at a
level previously unseen by a Trinity College Rugby side and I hope Will’s
words will inspire us on to greater things to come
Their were many other highlights, such as meeting the Western
Force players at the Sydney Football Stadium and going on the Jet Boat on
Sydney Harbour. The tour was a huge success mainly due to the dedication
of the coaches, parents and, of course, the players. With the club
progressing in leaps and bounds we are just about ready to go into the
PSA competition and put TC rugby back on the rugby map,
