Trinity had a mixed bag of results last weekend. On the park our Year 8 and 10s found life a little tougher after their emphatic wins the previous week and were beaten by a physically big Guildford outfit.

The Year 9 team came away with a fantastic moral boosting win and the Magic boys racked up the tries in their demolition of Hale at their festival.

The Seniors had a great day with the 1st and 2nd XV's both recording a win. Having rifled through the history books I found that the last time the 1st and 2nd XVs won on the same day was Saturday 30th July 2005. It is encouraging to see all the hard work both on and off the park paying dividend, so congratulations to all involved.

I wish all our teams the very best of luck this weekend against  Wesley.

For those parents with sons in the 1st XV; 1st XV play Christchurch at Waterford on Thursday 28th May at 2pm.

MATCH REPORTS

1st XV

Guildford Grammar 0  v  Trinity College 30

Round 2 saw the two senior teams travel out to Guilford Grammar for what was anticipated to be an important game in the context of the season. After a 13-13 draw with Scotch College the week before, the boys in the 1st XV were looking to put a win on the board and build on last week’s performance. Pre-game we were boosted by the hard fought win from our mates in the second team which gave us a lift just prior to kick off and the boys in the seconds should be congratulated on a sound win in opposition territory.

We had spoken of Guilford’s want to intimidate in the first 10 minutes as they had previously suffered defeats in their previous two fixtures. We knew we had to silence the opposition crowd and score early points, and we were able to do so through a penalty goal in the first 10 minutes. Then in broken play inside the Guilford 22, a simple switch enabled Henry Robinson-Grone to dodge and weave his way through a pack of Guilford forwards and crash over for his first try of the season. The conversion followed and we saw ourselves 10-0 in front. Some handling errors and a dubious forward pass saw some missed opportunities come our way, which would have seen us further ahead approaching half time, however a penalty goal minutes before the break saw us go into the sheds at half time 13-0 ahead.

The second half began and both teams utilized their kicking games in a jostle for field position. Our “back 3” though were able to combat Guilford’s search for territory, with the likes of Kurt Penney, Alex Collens and Max Fairclough running the ball back with great success. Guilford was still within striking distance 10 minutes into the second half; however a penalty allowed us to edge ahead to a 16-0 lead. What then followed was a moment of brilliance from Troy Bonnett, with an amazing charge down which allowed Shan Barr to capitalize on the loose ball and score his first try for Trinity this season. The conversion was successful and we were ahead 23-0. We could sniff the bonus point and it was within our grasp when our captain Sean Taggart crashed over for another try. With another successful conversion we had 30 un-answered points on the board and with 2 minutes to go wanted the bonus point. We threw the ball without fear in the last couple of minutes however we were unfortunate not to cap off the commanding win without the important bonus point. Still, we can be pleased with our efforts, as we look forward to getting back to work this week and taking it up to a Wesley outfit next weekend.

Some notable performers included the likes of our hard working front row, who never gave up and got stuck in for the second week in a row, the tireless efforts of Troy Bonnet and Liam Bourke at the break down against more sizable opponents, the courage and leadership of Bryan Lush and the fancy footwork of our front row forward Jack McIver.

2nd XV

Guildford Grammar  v  12 Trinity College 17

There was an atmosphere of confidence when the boys ran onto the park this weekend. Although we had lost the previous week we all knew we just had to put it together on the day. Right from the word go the forwards dominated the rucks with Lachlan Spence getting clean ball out to the backs. We stuck to our game plan and played a territory game with superb kicking from Declan Short which allowed us to play down in Guildford's half for most of the first half. Finally we broke through the line after putting together a couple of rucks and with the conversion we were up 7-0. The boys kept playing to their strengths and yet again we scored to go into the half 12-0 up.

After a stern talking to from Mr Webb the boys knew that we couldn’t let our guard down. But we made it hard for ourselves letting Guildford play in our half for the first 20 minutes and letting in two tries and a conversion so the score was level at 12-12. To the boys credit though they stood up and gave it back with the forwards again stepping up and leading the team dominating the lineouts and providing clean ball at the breakdown. It paid dividends with Declan crossing the line after some handy ball skills. The whistle sounded with the score at 17-12 and the boys realising the potential that was always there. Mentions would have to go to both Lachlan Spence and Declan Short, who played half back and flyhalf respectably, for their fine kicking and play under pressure and to Michael Riciardello for his superb steals in the lineouts. Also to all the forwards who played out an outstanding game against a much bigger pack. Well done boys!

Year 10

Trinity College  v  5 Guildford 38

A week is a long time in sport. The boys paid the price of an easy first up match last week against Scotch College, where as Guildford Grammar were coming off a mentally and physically hardened narrow lose to Hale School and it showed! Guildford played the sort of game we are aspiring to, that is, up front intensity, continuity of possession and moving the ball wide with confidence and speed. Whilst our lads showed spirit and at times individual determination we lacked cohesive intensity in the forwards, missed numerous first up tackles by going too high (including conceding a penalty try) and not realigning quickly enough off the ball in the backs in either attack or defense.

Joshua Mapstone crossed for our only try of the match following a determined run, having fielded an errant Guildford kick, one of their few mistakes or deviations from their game plan. The match was a good well structured physical contest. Now we know (and have felt) what the step up to competitive Year 10 rugby is about! We offer no excuses but hopefully some determined resolve. I’m confident we can learn from the experience with the return fixture at Guildford later in the year bench marking our progress for the season.

Thanks to Mr. John Corder for assisting with the coaching on Saturday morning. Our attention now turns to our next away fixture against Wesley College.

MR HAILES

Year 9

Guildford Grammar 10  v  Trinity College 17

On Friday the 15th May 2009 the Year 9s  had the goal to redeem themselves from the loss they had the previous Friday. The other aim for the week was to support each other in open play and look to get involved.

We were captained by Connor Spence; within ten minutes or so in he scored the first try of the game backed with a successful conversion by Sean Grogan. Guildford then kicked a penalty and followed this with a quick try but luckily for us they missed the conversion. However the Trinity forwards kept up the hard hits giving Guildford no ground.

Liam Parsons, our new wing, had many great runs but just fell short of the line. His efforts finally paid off with a try in the corner. Just before the second half Mitch Scott-Rogen scored the third try for the team, Sean successfully converted this again.

Guildford eventually got going in the second half, but both teams managed to hold each other off from the try line on numerous occasions.  A big thanks to Mr Turner for coaching, Mrs Hovane (Marshies mum) for the oranges and to our forwards for solid efforts for the whole game. The final score was 17-10 in our favour.

THOMAS FAIRCLOUGH

Year 9 Magic

It was an amazing effort by the whole team. A great improvement from last week. We won two games and drew a game. The first game we beat Hale 50 -0, second game we beat Scotch 15 – 5 and third game against Scotch was a draw. We had outstanding efforts by the whole team and no player took a backward step. Everyone gave it a try and we succeeded. Again it was a great effort by the team and we are all looking forward to next week.

JACOB REES

Year 8

Trinity College 12  v  Guildford Grammar 24

Trinity went into the game with high hopes but expecting a tough game.In the first couple of minutes we missed so many tackles and Guildford scored three quick tries. Towards the end of the first half our flyhalf Peter was injured but had to continue to play due to lack of substitutes. We went into the break 17 to nil down but with a determination to come back in the second half despite our size being a disadvantage.

A few minutes into the second half we won the ball from a lineout and a maul which allowed Angus Gillespie to run from the back with Conall Taggart on his tail, Conall took the ball and made some ground before offloading to Luke Hutchison to score a converted try.

With some confidence growing in the team Angus picked the ball and went blind with Conall behind, Angus was tackled but was able to pop it to Conall who ran in Trinity's second try. From then on a win was not out of the question and everyone stepped up to try and get it.

Guildford only ventured into our half twice in the second half with Trinity's forward pack proving too strong for the monumental Guildford scrum. However in the last play of the game our poor defence on the wing really showed and Guildford ran 100 metres to score a converted try to win the game 24-12.

IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER

  • Thursday 28th May 1st XV play Christchurch at Waterford at 2pm

In order that all PSA schools play each other twice at first team level, this year it has been introduced that the extra two games will be played on a Thursday afternoon. The first of these games is next Thursday 28th May at Waterford. Kick off is at 2pm and all members of the Trinity Rugby community are encouraged to come along and support the 1st XV. Please note that this fixture is for the 1st XV ONLY.

  • Sat 13th June Rugby hosts Morning Tea at Waterford

It is customary for each sporting code to assist with the serving of morning tea at Waterford when the 1st teams are playing there. On Saturday 13th June it is the turn of the Rugby Club. It would be appreciated if we could have lots of parent help on the day to lighten the load. In order to allow parents watch their sons play, it is anticipated that parents with boys in the 1st XV will help in the clubrooms during the 2nd XV game and visa versa during the 1st XV match.

At every morning tea at Waterford all Trinity families are asked to bring a plate. We have to provide food for all the visiting players and parents as well as our own teams and families, so please remember your contribution on these days.

  • Sat 15th August Trinity College Rugby Club Award Presentation Dinner

This is a night when the entire Trinity Rugby Club community come together to celebrate the end of the season. Boys from all year groups and their families are welcome. Families are asked to arrive from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm sharp start. This is a NON-BYO function. Please mark this date in your diary and more details will be released nearer the time.

RUGBY CLUB THANKS

Thanks to Dane Meade (father of Keenan Year 8 and Tavish Year 4) for his kind donation of a framed and signed copy of the 1st and 2nd XV with Matt Giteau while on their recent tour to Sydney. A photo of Trinity rugby players with a world class player such as Giteau deserves prominence so Mr. Lewis is seeking a suitable location for the photo to be hung in the College for all to see.
