MATCH REPORTS
1ST XV
Trinity College 23 v Wesley College 21
Coming off a strong victory against Guilford, the boys
were high in spirits and ready for anything that Wesley would throw at
us. It was a wet Saturday morning on Ken Sass Field, and we knew that
this would play into the hands of the more physical Wesley side. We
started well with Mattais Calligaro making a big break from the
kickoff, it was the start that we wanted and we received a penalty inside
their twenty-two, and super boot Sam Harris knocked it over with relative
ease. Yet, the game came to a turning point after that. We seemed to
stray from the game plan we started with, and began to panic. Our set
piece wasn’t working; we were trying to play the
game at too fast a pace and were taking far too many
risks, this lead to Wesley scoring their first of three tries. Yet, Sam
Harris's boot kept us in the game. We seemed to be missing far too many
tackles, even though our defence had been our strength last week.
After half time we reassessed the situation, and decided
to change the game plan and get the ball out wide, with our wingers
hardly touching the ball in the first half. We were also out muscled by
their much stronger forwards, so we needed to get quick ball and spread
it wide. We also had the wind behind our backs. We once again used Sam’s
boot to great effect to play a European style game inside Wesley’s
twenty-two. We did this with great effect, but butchered a few
opportunities outwide, and again we began to panic and let in two easy
tries. But, impact player Daniel Nokes who had already scored a try in
the 2nd XV game crashed over the try line to give us the
lead.
But, to the boys credit we held strong and our never say
die attitude prevailed with Sam booting six penalty goals to lead us to a
23 – 21 victory. The stand outs in the game were Bryan Lush who once
again was the work horse of the team, Alex Collens, who had little of the
ball yet made some crucial tackles and had a great & kick chase,
Henry Robison-Grone who made an abundance of tackles in midfield and
super boot Sam Harris who kicked us to victory. As the old saying goes “a
great side can win, even when they play poorly”, but lets not get ahead
of ourselves just yet. I can gladly say we remain unbeaten on Ken Sass
field, and let’s hope it will remain that way after we play Christ Church
on Thursday afternoon.

2ND XV
Trinity College 12 v Wesley College 12
The intensity from the warm up was carried onto the pitch
on Saturday with it being our first match on the newly named Ken Sass
field. It was evident that the boys wanted to carry our success from last
week into this game. We started off strongly making our tackles and
playing a territory dominated game in the wet weather. After a series of
dropped balls Wesley hit up through the forwards scoring the first try of
the game. The boys then lifted the intensity and we managed to get
ourselves down into the oppositions half. After a number of free kicks we
continued to build pressure and Michael Dawson picked the ball from the
back of a scrum at No. 8 and strolled on through the defence under the
posts for a much needed try. After a series of breaks and desperate cover
defence from both teams the whistle sounded with us ahead going into the
break 7-5.
We all knew what we had to do and that was to score early
in the start of the second half. After battling for 10 minutes in their
half we were awarded a penalty which was taken by David Watts who broke
through a few tackles went down and placed the ball which was
subsequently picked up by Daniel Nokes who saw the line and scored. The
game was tense with Wesley playing down in our half and we were lucky not
to concede a try until the dying minutes when they made the best of
a 3 man overlap and scored with time up. All they had to do was the
improbable and kick the conversion to draw the game, and to our
disappointment they did. The whistle sounded at 12-12 with the boys a
little disappointed but still proud at their efforts. Special mention
again has to go to the forwards for working tirelessly getting to every
breakdown to provide great ball to Declan Short and I, also to Michael
Riccadello who stole about 75 percent of Wesley’s ball in their
lineout.

Wesley College 19 v Trinity College 29
Congratulations to the team on a well earned win on the
weekend. It was good to see an increased intensity and concentration in
pre-game warm ups and an elevated sense of urgency during the game as
opposed to last week against Guildford. This new approach saw Trinity
applying the pressure from the very start of the match and maintaining it
most of the way through the game. The success of our first up tackles can
also be attributed to our success upfront, helping to apply pressure both
in offence, and in defence leading to a very one sided first half in our
favour. Physical fitness however became an issue once more in the second
half as Wesley slipped in with a few easy tries on behalf of our own
slack defence and general laziness around the park. Nothing we can’t fix
with a few extra commandos at training!
Tries went to:
• Mitchell Boros (1)
• Luke Fogliani (1)
• Alec Wilson (1)
• Jacob Goddard (1)
• Tom Bourke (1)
Conversions:
• Alex Blunt (2/5)
Although we had a good win, there is still plenty to work
on over the next two weeks. We still need to work on our ABC defence
patterns around the ruck, communication 123, and man-works-ball-works as
we saw far too many cross field runs by many players. Let’s take the next
two weeks as an opportunity to crack down on these few little things and
taking it to Hale in two weeks time.
MITCHELL BOROS

Year 9
Trinity arrived at Waterford, full of energy, after the
last weeks win against Guildford. A fit and determined Trinity side took
control of the game within the first ten minutes, scoring twice. Wesley
had few scoring opportunities because Trinity's defense was far superior,
and Wesley's attack inexperienced. The wet and wild weather caused
Trinity few problems, the boys actually enjoying playing in the rain.
Highlights that need to be mentioned:
Tim Ronchi's run away try, where he ran around Wesley's forwards and
through Wesley's backs going on to score the try of the game.
Stephen Sertorio's first ever try, he incorporated some sleek footwork,
running right over Wesley's outside backs.
DAVID FERRARI
Year 9 Magic
It was a very tough game for the boys this week against
Scotch. We lost the match 20 - 0. The weather conditions were not the
best and the rain made the game a bit more interesting. The game became
very scrappy as the pitch started to cut up and made handling the ball
very difficult. With a little more training and some tackling practise
I’m sure we can do much better next week. A bit unlucky this week but
next week we can do better.
JACOB REES
Year 8
Wesley College 5 v Trinity College 29
Our Year 8s went into the game expecting an easy
game and a high score in somewhat stormy conditions. Straight after our
kickoff we got a turnover, kicking the ball into touch on the 5metre
line. We won the Wesley throw and started to pick and drive. From there
Finlay Koenig-Luck scored our first try.
Straight after the kickoff Angus Gillespie ran most of the
pitch with another converted try under the post. We then let our
concentration lapse and let some tackles go as Wesley got a
penalty from which they scored an unconverted try. Then
with some confusion and scrappy play Conall Taggart scored escaping
through some tough tackles. Conall added a second try to our score just
before half time.
In the second half we lost our structure and only
managed to score one more try and Wesley remained on five points. We are expecting
to be faced with a lot of tackling practice at training next week.

TRINITY BOYS ENJOYING
SOME FINE RUGBY COMPANY
David Ferrari (Year 9) recently won a competition
run by Rugby WA to be the Mascot at the Western Force v Lions match
held on the 24th April at Subiaco. The prize included a fully signed
team jersey, tossing the coin with the respective captains prior to the
game, running the match ball out at Subiaco and having 20 friends form
the Guard of Honour for the run through. The best part of the prize was
having breakfast with two players of his choosing, Nathan Sharpe and
Richard Brown - John Mitchell was a bonus inclusion. He also took
his brother Michael (Year 5G) along for the ride. This will be a
memory that both Ferrari boys will treasure for many years.
