MATCH REPORTS
1st XV
Trinity College 25 V Aquinas College 25
The 1st XV rugby match on Saturday was an absolute
nail-biter decided unfortunately by an Aquinas try in the dying stages of
the game to bring the scores to 25 points a piece.
Coming off the loss against Hale last week, we trained
hard during the week and went into the game focusing on scrums, line-outs
and depth in attack.
Aquinas drew first blood scoring their first try within
minutes after kick-off catching our defences off guard.
We then managed to keep ourselves in the game with a try
on the half time break.
The second half saw two more tries scored by Trinity, one
consisting of Kurt's "Almost Jared Haynes" moment as he blitzed
down the wing to get our third.
At this stage we were 5 points up with 8 minutes to go
until Aquinas ran down a try in the dying minutes but thankfully missed
the conversion. This gave us our second draw of season.
Next week we play Christ Church and hopefully the boys
will pull it together and we come out hard for the second half of
the season.

1st XV Mid-Season
Report
Following a very successful pre season tour to Sydney and
some tough training sessions back here in Perth the 1st XV went into the
first game full of confidence against the much fancied Scotch College.
The boys were out to cause an upset on our first outing on the newly
named Ken Sass Field. Although we were up against the largest pack of
forwards in the competition the boys gave their all and demonstrated that
all the work done during pre season had played off. Unfortunately with
the last play of the game Scotch scored a try, and should have won the
game with the conversion, but Sassy's powers must have been on our side
and we came away with a respectable draw. Although disappointed at having
thrown away a 13 -0 lead we were still happy with our structure and the
way we competed against a much more physical side.
We went into our next two games no longer the underdogs
and went on to a convincing 30 -0 win over Guildford, although a bonus
point would have been nice and then won a hard fought game against Wesley
at home.
We played Christ Church in the midweek game and broke all records with a
stunning display of attacking team rugby with a 83 - 0 win, this gave the
boys great confidence going into the big one against Hale. Although we
were the underdogs, we really fancied our chances against a very strong
Hale outfit, but just came up short with a lack continuity and control
letting us down on the day. Our final game of the 1st round of matches
was against Aquinas and yet again we allowed a winning position slip by
through a lack of control and some suspect defense to allow Aquinas a
creditable 25 - 25 draw. The boys were bitterly disappointed by the
result and this leaves us third in the competition at the half way point.
The aim at the start of the season was to crack the top
three, an achievement that has not been successful since 2002. So we are
on the right track, but know that our lack of bonus points has really let
us down and that we need to stick to our structure, like we achieved in
the Christ Church game in order to sustain this position and hopefully
aim for higher honours.

Trinity College 5 V Aquinas College 14
The boys fronted up to the challenge of Aquinas with their heads switched
on after last weeks poor performance. We started off strong with both
teams battling it out and with our forwards actually counter rucking some
ball. We were unable to turn our pressure in their half into points and
Aquinas struck back scoring a try with a few minutes to go in the half
and converted to go into the break 7-0 up. The boys raised their heads at
half time knowing that we were fully capable of coming back in what had
proved already to be an even contest.
We went into the second half ready for a hard contest.
Within 10 minutes we scored our first with Max Fairclough crossing the
line under the posts after a series of hard fought forward pick and gos.
The game then progressed with both Aquinas and us attacking hard with
errors coming from both sides. With 3 minutes to go we were 5metres out
and looked dangerous to score but through lack of forward support in the
ruck we lost the ball and Aquinas quick to counter attack scored after a
short period of sloppy missed tackles by the boys. The final whistle
sounded with Aquinas winning the game 14-5 in what was a hard fought
game. I must say the boys did play well and fought hard this
week but it was the simple mistakes that let us down and next week we
have to focus on playing like a team not a pack of individuals.

2nd
XV Mid-Season Report
The 2nd XV rugby team has a lot to be proud of and a lot
of things to work on as we hit the mid season break. We stand now with 1
win, 1 draw and 3 losses. This time last season the 2nd XV had not won a
single game and went through the whole season not getting within 10
points of even winning a single game. We have already bettered the
results of last year's team and we are improving with each performance.
The squad is working hard to fix the areas that are letting us down and
improving the areas that we are good at. We are travelling in a positive
direction even with the loss against Aquinas last week by just a narrow
margin.
The difficult thing about playing in the 2nd XV is that
many people play out of their normal positions due to players either
going up to 1st XV level or dropping down. There have been many
outstanding players in the 2nd XV thus far including Michael Ricciardello
for his outstanding performance in the lineouts week after week, Nick
Brown with his lineout throwing, Declan Shortt for his consistent
attitude to playing the game the way we have trained at, and lastly but
definitely not the least Matt Polomka for his efforts on the wing. As a
new player to the game he is always a stand out with minimal mistakes
every week.
We cannot stop here and must persist with improving all aspects of our
game. It would not be unrealistic of us to say that we should at least
match if not better our performance thus far when we come up against the
same teams in the second half of the season.
Tony Webb 2nd XV Coach
Year 10
Aquinas College 12 v Trinity College 0
The boys were full of confidence after showing that we
could mix it with the best of them against Hale last week. With the focus
this week being on the development of the squad we saw a reshuffle in the
starting line up. A sign of a great team is one that can show depth in
their starting line up and this is something which we are endeavouring
towards.
The first half began with an even tussle and both Mitch and Chris should
be commended for keeping the reshuffled side together. It was a test for
the team to see how they dealt with less experienced players in the
starting line up. Positive things came from this as we saw team mates
which previously had little game time, excelling and certainly putting
themselves up for contention for a starting spot next week.
Though with a lack of field position in the first half, we lacked in
attacking intensity and it was not long before Aquinas scored 2 tries.
These tries were a result of our lack of ability in making first up tackles, an area which
could do with some work on.
Second half saw a much more attacking Trinity side with a lot better
field position. Though ball
security and handling were a problem, and
resulted in many knock-ons. We must remember our basics of caring for the
ball with the “Double V”. The second half was much more productive but we
failed to string together crucial phases.
Although we did not come away with a win. It could easily be said that
you can learn more from a defeat then you could do from a win.
Once again we thank all the parents for their support and refreshments
and look forward to next week against Christ Church.

Year 10 Mid-Season Report
With the completion of Round 5 against Aquinas College,
the team is two (2) and three (3). This is perhaps a little below where
we should be, however much has been achieved in the first half of the
season.
The season opened with an easy, probably too easy, win against Scotch
College (65-5) but just reward for the nine pre-season training sessions.
Next up was a steep learning curve against a robust well structured
Guildford Grammar (5-38). To the boys credit they quickly acquired some
physicality and intensity winning the next game against Wesley College
(29-19). We travelled to Hale School in support of the 1st and 2nd XV and
showed that we can mix it with the best, going down narrowly two tries to
three (14-21), having dominated Hale for much of the game.
With some of our boys a little down on game time essential
for their development, we reorganized the starting line-up for the
Aquinas College game to better accommodate the full squad. Despite all
members contributing and a sustained intense second half with dominant
field position, we were unable to reduce the first half deficit (0-12).
The boys are training and playing well under the leadership of Mitchell,
Chris, Luke and Mike. We appreciate all the support and assistance from
family and friends. Our goals for the second half of the season are to:
deliver first-up tackles; improve ball security and options; maintain
intensity; stay composed yet varied in attack and win the close ones! We
look forward to returning to the Sass Field for our second home fixture
against Christ Church Grammar.
Ian Hailes Year 10 Coach
Year 9
Trinity College 30 V Aquinas College 10
On Friday the 12th of June, the mighty “green and blue”
ran onto the Ken Sass field looking strong and very confident
against Aquinas College. In the first 10 minutes Trinity overpowered the
defenders and attackers from Aquinas to score 4 tries. This was due to
the great effort and tackles made by Tomas Hovane, Connor Spence and Timothy
Ronchi. Tries in first half went to Mitchell Scott-Rogan who scored 2,
Connor Spence 1 and Thomas Fairclough 1, and also 1 try to Aquinas.
In the second half Aquinas put up a lot more of a fight than in the first
half. They defended a lot of the ball and concentrated on defending their
try line from the quick and strong attacks of Trinity. In the last
quarter of the game there were many attempts to score from mostly Trinity
but most of them were stopped by the Aquinas’ defense. The only try
scored in the second half of the game was by Vinh Nguyen. Aquinas made
one last effort to make a try.
HIGHLIGHTS
Jacob Rees: Excellent skills on the
ball. He showed great ability to help out the backs and forwards and
really support the team in this great game.
Matthew Dondas:
His awesome quick short sprints and even his long sprints which were
almost the length of the whole field. For instance, when he attempted a
try but stepped outside the boundary of
the right wing whilst making his run.
Overall the whole team put in a massive effort to win the game.
Good Work Boys !

Year 9 Mid-Season Report
I would like to congratulate all the Year 9 Rugby players at this point
of the season. The enthusiasm and energy that all players have
demonstrated so far, at both training and in games has been commendable.
As we turn into the second half of the season all players have steadily
improved their fitness which was a real concern at the start of the
season. As this area has improved the Year 9 as team has played
attacking, positive Rugby and some pleasing results have been achieved.
One important focus of the team has been discipline and the ability to
work as a team. This has steadily improved. The loss against the Hale
School, I feel, was a turning point of the season. All players realised
that they are capable of being a real force in the Year 9 competition and
it is with great expectation that we try to redeem the result at
Waterford later in the season. Our first game of the season vs. Scotch
College was disappointing; however it showed us the commitment required
to play at a high standard. Strong wins against Guildford , Wesley and
Aquinas has certainly helped to strengthen our confidence in our
team-mates and the style of Rugby we play.
I would like to commend Connor Spence for his example and leadership so
far this season. It has been noticeable how other players have also taken
upon leadership roles during games. The strength of the A team has been
reliant upon the Magic Squad, many players have been called upon as a
result of injury and performed admirably. Having depth in the Year 9
squad means there is competition for every position, this is a healthy
state for the Year 9 squad.
I would also like to thank the Year 9 parents for their continued support
so far this season. It is great to see the strong Rugby culture at
Trinity College and I know the players (and myself) are very appreciative
each week.
It is important as a group that we maintain the effort for the rest of
the season and most importantly that we enjoy playing the game. We seem
to be building momentum and with the up-coming break it is important that
players maintain their fitness. The season will bring other challenges to
us as a team and squad and it is important that we always remain positive
and wear our school colours with pride.

Year 8
Aquinas College 5 V Trinity College 32
We came into the game determined but knowing it will be a
physical encounter.
We won the coin toss for the game and elected to kick. We
stole the ball a few plays later and with some well structured phases
Jacob Phoebe ran a great inside ball and ran over for a try. Next with
some broken tackles Jacob Phoebe busted over for his second try in the
corner which raised some eyebrows and frustration to the other team about
whether he was out or not. With confidence reaching the arrogance point
it created a lapse in our concentration creating a hole for the Aquinas
backline to exploit. Our discipline was also lost and the
Aquinas try turned out to be a good thing and put us back in
our place. Now with realization that Aquinas wouldn't be a push
over we stepped up. With a red ball called (backline ball) Angus
Gillespie got a hit up ball from Peter Fitzgerald and broke the line and
got a runaway try. Later on with some black balls called (forward hit up)
Conall Taggart our halfback dummied the open side black ball and ran
blind 35 metres for a try to end the half.
We went into the second half with a plan not to
let Aquinas score another try. But for the first part of the half
that didn’t look like it was going to happen with Aquinas keeping their composure,
but with some good defense from the back of the scrum and in the back
line we held them off. Later with a great lineout catch from Simon
Nicole, and a great move called by Peter which was also well
executed, Luke Hutchinson strolled over the line for a try. After a
few close missed tries for both teams and the game coming towards
its end Noah Harris striped the ball from the ruck and ran over for a try
which finished the game with a score of 32 -5. This was our best game of
the year so far.
NOAH HARRIS & CONALL TAGGART

Year 8 Mid-Season Report
So far the year 8 rugby have had an excellent season
improving in every game. The boys had an excellent pre-season spending
the Sunday before term started working on handling drills and fitness.
The team was well motivated and ready to face the first
challenge of Scotch in the opening game. Trinity wiped them off the park
within the first half with tries from 4 different players in the team.
Special mention goes to Angus Gillespie who scored a hat-trick of tries.
We knew that Guilford would be a stern test this early in the season with
many players not having played before. We struggled against their size
and this showed when we had some weaknesses in defense. So we hit
the training ground hard the next week and the team's attitude was
excellent. Wesley were a big pack of forwards and they had good pace
outside but our improved defense stood strong and we had too much fire
power; Conall Taggart playing a captain's role and scoring 3 excellent
tries. Hale were next and we prepared well and knew that we faced a team
with far more experience than us. It was a very close game with both
teams scoring quality tries. Frank Mannel got the hard man award for
trying to play on with a broken leg! Trinity struggled to hit top gear
throughout the game and found it hard to cover their backline out wide.
Again I was very impressed with the response from the loss, we worked on
improving our structure in attack and didn’t Aquinas know it. Right from
the whistle Trinity looked focused and determined and our structured
attack worked well with 5 different players scoring superb tries.
The season has been a sharp learning curve for some of our players and
the team has worked very hard on playing as a unit. I am relishing the
second half of the season and I am confident we can improve further.
