It was a strong start to the second half of the season for TC rugby with the Year 8’s, 9’s and 10’s all victorious and the 1st XV getting the wheels back on the bus with a convincing 24 – 0 win over a determined Christ Church outfit. Unfortunately we were denied the elusive clean sweep as the 2nd XV went down 15 – 7 in a scrappy affair.

Most teams will now have a few weeks off to recover from all those bumps and bruises and to concentrate on improving those minor details at training before we are back in action on the first weekend of Term 3 against Scotch College.

No rest for the 1st XV however as they play away to Aquinas College next Thursday (2nd July) at 2.30pm. This is massive game for the boys as we need to put the record straight following Aquinas’ last gasp draw a few weeks ago. Hopefully the boys wont be so generous this time round!

Enjoy the bye weekend and hope see you all Aquinas on the 2nd July to cheer on the 1st XV.

MATCH REPORTS

1st XV

Christ Church 0 V Trinity College 24

After last week's disappointing result against Aquinas the team was looking to bounce back and get on top of a previously humiliated Christ Church. It was good to see in the pre-match warm up the boys had no complacency when playing a bottom of the table side and a real desire to take control of the match.

The wet and gloomy weather made kicking difficult as well as general play. As Mr. Lewis predicted playing Christ Church on their grounds was a completely different experience than the match weeks before and this was shown by the score board at half time with Trinity only up by 3 points, thanks to a penalty kick from Sam Harris.

The second half saw the team rejuvenated with confidence and reset on their goal to gain a much needed bonus point. We could see that Christ Church’s defence was tiring and that soon a break would occur. The first try was scored by fullback Kurt Penney due to some of his trademark hard running. This gave the team a great opportunity to crush the remnants of the Christ Church defence and soon after the team crossed the game line twice more, thanks to some more hard running. The pressure was now on the team to get one more try and gain the bonus point. The boys came very close on many occasions, however, we failed to convert these opportunities into points.

Unfortunately the final whistle blew and once again a much desired bonus point had eluded the Trinity side. Although not the optimal result many positives can be seen from the match and further improvements can be made to ensure a strong win against arch rivals, Aquinas, next week.

2nd XV

Christ Church 15 Trinity College 7

The boys went down on Saturday with another disappointing loss this time to Christ Church. The boys seemed to have their heads switched on and warmed up well in wet and cold conditions. The game started off with a fast tempo with Christ Church showing their efficiency and hunger for the ball. They moved through their forwards with fast rucks and many pick and go’s which resulted in them advancing from their own 22m line into ours and then subsequently scoring. After a lot of play in their half and with the boys getting hammered with infringements around the ruck we proceeded to notch our first score after a period of good play by the team. We went into the half -time with the score at 7 - 7.

The boys seemed to know what they did wrong and went out in the second half  hungier. But this was to no avail as yet again we were dominated in the rucks and with the referee not doing us any favours we didn’t score at all in the second half.  We lacked possession or consistency lost possession due to ball security around the rucks or through sloppy ball handling. There were only a few players on the park who could walk off saying they had done their best but amongst those who could were our fearless wingers Matt Polomka and Sam Jennison who defended strongly often outnumbered and save numerous tries. Hopefully the boys can now pick themselves up after this defeat and ready themselves with plenty of time till our next game in Term 3.

YEAR 10

Trinity  College 19 V Christ Church 17

With a close win over Aquinas last week the team was reasonably excited. Our first up tackles were much better this week than last, this doesn’t mean there isn’t room for improvement. Our rucks during the game were much better. The structure of our game had improved from last week, keeping our hands out of the rucks, and playing the whistle. The boys played through the shower of rain, and managed to keep their grip on the ball, and not dropping it as much as we did last week. Again, there is still room for improvement on our ball handling skills. Some players need to remember which hand they have the ball in going into the contact contest.

There was a lot more of the ball doing the work during the game; the boys were passing more frequently, which was an improvement on all the men doing the work during our AC vs TC game. Some boys need to remember to straighten up their running after receiving the ball, and remember running on an angle is for a reason. There was a huge sense of courage during the game, with most of our players being less reserved, and giving all they had for the first half of the game, and stamping their authority with some “Killer Tackles”.Coming back from one try down in the first fifteen minutes of the game was difficult. But with the boys playing for each other, rather than themselves we lead at half-time by a conversion: Trinity 7and Christ Church 5.

We scored the important first try in the second half with Alex Blunt converting, the score was Trinity 14 and Christ Church 5. Alex Blunt scored a nice try out wide. The game went on and some mistakes were made, including the gift of an intercept try to Christ Church. We finished the game strong with Anthony Di Michele unlucky not to score on full-time.
Point scorers were
- Mitch Boros: 1 Try
- Luke Fogliani: 1 Try
- Alex Blunt: 1 Try, 2 Conversions

With a few commandos and 100 warm up passes all this can easily be fixed. There aren’t any more games this term, but the team is sure that with the extra training sessions, our entire game will improve.

YEAR 9

Christ Church 12 V Trinity College 20

It was a solid effort by all the Year 9 rugby players on Friday, our team work skills are coming together nicely with a few of the best tries we have produced this season. We did not let the harsh conditions get the better of us and we played hard against Christ Church dominating the majority of the contested ball. The forwards dominated the rucks and mauls, getting good ball out to the backs. The backs played really well; they were aggressive in defence and used to our advantage the speed we have in our outside backs.

YEAR 8

Trinity College 35 V Christ Church 24

After our big win over Aquinas College our spirits were high coming into this game however Christ Church are a strong side so in preparation Coach Shanassy drilled us hard at training in our defensive game. We also went into the match with a few of our experienced players out due to injuries so Mr. Shanassy recruited 3 Trinity AFL players to help us out against Christ Church.

The game started with Trinity receiving the ball from the Christ Church kick off, we marked and ran it into a strongly organised Christ Church forward pack. The first try came from Conall intercepting a Christ Church pass in their 22 and diving over to score. The next 2 tries were scored by Conall and Tom before half-time was called.

We came back from half time and Christ Church hit back with the first try of the second half. The next points on the board were made by Jacob when he received a kick in our 22 and ran almost the whole length of the pitch to score right under the posts. Angus scored next with a fast pick and go from the ruck. Luke then scored 2 successive tries with the help of the forwards mauling the ball forward. Christ Church came back hard with 2 tries in a row to finish off the game but Trinity came away with the win.

19/06/2009 Game Notes:

*Matt Clark did a solid job as a starting foward contributing to the break downs, scrums and moving the ball forwards.

*Big thanks to Cory, Loklin and John for playing their first game of Union and helping us get over the line for a Trinity win.

*The Christ Church match was the last game of the term and all the boys are fired up for strong second half of the season come term 3.
